Celina grad Seth Lonsway was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 19th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft Wednesday.
The 6’2, 197-pound Lonsway was named WBL Player of the Year and Division II Co-Player of the Year. He finished his senior season with a 7-1 record, throwing a school record 92 strikeouts for the Bulldogs.
Lonsway, who has signed to play at Ohio State if he chooses not to sign with the Reds, becomes the highest drafted local high school player since Defiance’s Dace Kime was taken in the 8th round of the 2010 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
MLB.com’s scouting report on Lonsway reads:
After pitching with an upper-80s fastball on the showcase circuit last summer, Lonsway dedicated himself to getting stronger in the offseason. His work paid off when he came out touching 93 mph early this spring and held his improved velocity throughout his senior season. He could go as early as the third round and figures to get picked high enough to sign him away from an Ohio State commitment.
Lonsway now operates in the low 90s early in games and should throw a bit harder as he continues to develop physically. He can flash a good curveball at times but it’s below average at others and he can’t always land it in the strike zone. He shows some feel for his changeup, which has fade and should become an effective third pitch.
Lonsway is athletic and has a clean delivery, so he should be able to iron out the inconsistencies with his control and command. Though he’s not especially tall, he uses a high-three-quarters arm slot to create downhill plane on his pitches.
MinorLeagueBall.com listed Lonsway as the 16th best LHP prospect in the entire draft, while Baseball America listed Lonsway as the 17th best LHP prospect, and 127th overall for the First-Year Player Draft.
Defiance grad and current Ohio State OF Shea Murray was also taken in the draft Wednesday. Murray was taken in the 18th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
