Herb Lane Killed in Monday Accident
Perry head football and assistant boys basketball coach Herb Lane was killed in a Monday evening car crash.
According to the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, Lane was headed northbound on the I-75 overpass on McClain Road when his vehicle struck a bridge abutment, when he then veered left of center. He collided head-on with a car driven by 24-year-old Benjamin Hefner.
Both Lane and Hefner had to be extracted from their vehicles.
Lane, 44, was pronounced dead at St. Rita’s Medical Center. Hefner remains in stable condition at Lima Memorial.
A longtime coach for multiple sports at Perry High School, Lane just served his first season as head football coach for the Commodores.
The Perry boys basketball team is scheduled to play Fort Loramie in the Regional Semifinal Tuesday at 5:30 PM in Kettering. It is unknown whether that game will still take place as scheduled. OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Jerry Snodgrass could not be reached for comment.
Perry Local Schools have cancelled classes for Tuesday, March 14th.
Thoughts, prayers, and well wishes came in from all over the area.
