Ada Cancels Remainder of Football Season
Ada High School has announced they have cancelled the remainder of their 2020 football season.
According to a press release from the Northwest Conference, “safety concerns arising from a limited number of Ada players available have forced this decision for the Ada district”.
Ada started their season with 30 players on the roster, according to head coach Shawn Christopher. Due to injuries and players leaving the program, the Bulldogs were down to just 16 healthy players heading into Week 4.
“Today is one of those days that you dread, in your worst nightmares, that this could happen. And that happened,” Christopher told 419sports.com. “It’s been a trying week. The last 36 hours have been tough and trying for me personally, and for these kids.”
Christopher also told 419sports.com that he is stepping down from his position as head football coach at Ada, for a multitude of reasons.
“I’m getting ready to have my third kid here in a few months, I’ve got a seven-year-old who’s life I’m missing out on. My own personal health, and this football program needs a shot in the arm. And hopefully the new guy coming in can give it the shot that it deserves. I’ve been a part of Ada football every year since I was in the fifth grade. I coached through college, I coached through all that stuff. It’s been a hard day, for sure.”
Christopher was 4-19 during his tenure leading the purple and gold.
The Bulldogs are 0-3 on the season, and were slated to play Spencerville (3-0) in the first round of the Northwest Conference tournament Friday. Spencerville will now automatically advance in the tournament to play the winner of Allen East/Paulding next Friday. The Bearcats will not try to fill the new found open date on their schedule, Spencerville Athletic Director John Zerbe confirmed to 419sports.com.
