Columbus Grove Girls Basketball Makes History, Eyes First State Title
By: David Mansell
The Columbus Grove girls basketball team has already cemented its place in program history, but they aren’t finished yet. With a record-breaking season that has seen them claim their first-ever regional championship, the Bulldogs now stand just one game away from capturing their first Division VI state title.
Under the leadership of head coach Brian Schroeder, the Bulldogs have been dominant all year. They compiled a 26-2 record while running the table in the Northwest Conference (7-0) to win the league title. Schroeder’s efforts were recognized as he was named NWC Coach of the Year, a testament to the culture and success he has built within the program.
Columbus Grove’s historic postseason run continued last week when they took down Patrick Henry 45-41 to secure their first-ever regional championship. Then, on Friday, March 7 at the Elida Fieldhouse, they faced off against Minster in the state semifinals, a battle between two of the state’s premier small-school programs. The Bulldogs held their composure in a thrilling 43-40 victory, fueled by a 15-point performance from senior Lauryn Auchmuty, along with key contributions from Nicole Nesby (7 points) and Aubrey Schroeder (7 points).
Now, Columbus Grove will prepare for their biggest challenge yet as they take on Rootstown (27-1) in the Division VI state championship game on March 15 at the University of Dayton Arena. The Bulldogs have already shattered expectations, but they have one final goal left to accomplish: bringing a state title back to Columbus Grove.
At the heart of Columbus Grove’s success has been senior Lauryn Auchmuty, who has been the driving force for the Bulldogs all season. The NWC Player of the Year and future University of Findlay standout has delivered time and time again, averaging nearly 24 points per game, while also contributing 6 rebounds and 4.5 steals per contest. Her leadership and ability to take over games have been key in the Bulldogs’ tournament run.
Columbus Grove has also relied on its size and rebounding ability, led by junior Nicole Nesby, a Second-Team All-NWC selection, who averages 10 rebounds per game along with 7 points per contest. In addition, junior Kendall Palte and freshman Aubrey Schroeder were named NWC Honorable Mentions, showing the depth and talent that has helped push the Bulldogs to new heights.
Head Coach Brian Schroeder joined 93.1 The Fan’s weekly radio show The Afternoon Huddle on Tuesday, March 11, to reflect on their season and talk about the Lady Bulldogs state championship game.
